To check the general status of your tire’s tread, the “penny test” is common practice among car owners. Place a penny upside-down in a tread groove of your tire; the general consensus is that, if you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, it’s time for new tires. If you are keeping tires to the point where they fail, you could potentially be in for costly or dangerous consequences.
However, the penny test isn’t the only way to go; it’s also crucial to perform non-tread tests as well. Check for wear that appears prominently on one side of your tire over the other – this could mean poor alignment. Also, if your tires are primarily worn in the center, but not on the outer edges, it could mean that your tires are over-inflated. If it’s the other way around, they could be under-inflated.
